Nap Music for Kids and Toddlers

Good nap music for children is soft, wordless and predictable. It sounds the same from start to finish, so nothing startles a child who is nearly asleep.

30 minute napMusic fades in, fades out, a soft chime wakes you.

What makes music kind to little ears

  • Instrumental only. No lyrics to follow.
  • Nothing sudden. No loud drums or big changes.
  • Warm tone. Soft keys and pads, not sharp or bright sounds.
  • A low, steady volume. Quiet enough that you could talk over it.

Quiet time for children who have stopped napping

Many older children stop napping but still benefit from a quiet rest after lunch. Put on a calm playlist, offer a book or a soft toy, and call it quiet time. The focus reset playlist is a little lighter and works well for this.

Volume and speakers

Play the music through a speaker a few steps from the bed, not through headphones, and keep it low. Children’s ears are sensitive, and quiet is better.

Use the timer so the music stops by itself

The 30 minute nap fades the music in gently and fades it out before a soft chime. Pick 90 minutes for a longer nap. If the chime would wake a sleeping child, pick the length, then turn the volume down before you start. You can also stop the nap at any time.

How long should a child nap?

It depends on age and on the child. Check with your paediatrician or health visitor. This site is not medical advice. It only gives you a gentle soundtrack and a timer.

Questions

Is instrumental music better for children’s naps?

Many parents prefer it, because lyrics can be distracting or stimulating. Soft instrumental music is predictable and easy to ignore.

Should I leave music on all through a child’s nap?

It is up to you. A timer that fades the music out after 30 or 90 minutes means it does not play all afternoon.

Is this music safe for babies?

Keep any music low, play it from a speaker rather than headphones, and ask your paediatrician about your baby’s sleep. This site is not medical advice.

General information, not medical advice. If you are very tired all the time, or nap a lot and still feel awful, talk to a doctor. The nap timer is a gentle wake-up, not a safety alarm: set a backup alarm.
